The Restoration of the California State Building to its original 1935 glory has created a beautiful and monumental public art piece and tribute to the heritage of the State of California. The project involved remodeling the entrance, stucco and drywall repair, and installation of tile murals. Designed by Hollywood set designer Juan Larrinaga, the murals depict scenes of agriculture, transportation and industry in the state. Still to come will be the installation of two full-sized model grizzly bears sculptured to replicate dark brown bears that were mounted on each corner of the building facing the plaza from the roof for the 1935-1936 California Pacific International Exposition. The project is the winner of a 2021 AGC Build San Diego Merit Award for a Unique Special Project and a Save Our Heritage Organisation (SOHO) Gift to the People award.
