Barnhart-Reese recently completed the new state-of-the-art engine, generator, and on-highway truck testing facility at Hawthorne Catโs headquarters campus in San Diego, California. The structure is composed of three engine test bays and an expansion area for a fourth bay and is interconnected with underground cast-in-place cooling tanks and extensive complex concrete trenches, sumps, and access grating covering pits for flexibility of multiple engine platforms.
The new facility will also be the new home of Hawthorne Power Systems to test power packs using a large bay for electronic resistive/reactive load bank testing up to 3,300 KW. An additional outdoor area for generator testing of up to 8,000 horsepower, 6-megawatt generators is being constructed.
A raised control room with complex electronic monitoring systems sits above the engine bays to allow remote monitoring of operating engines. The room is protected with reinforced masonry walls, bulletproof (ballistic) glass, and soundproof doors and windows to provide safety and comfort to the operators during the testing procedures.
