The Sanford Education Center was constructed within National University’s headquarters in La Jolla, California. The Center was designed to replace the building’s lobby and core, which included a massive 30-foot water feature and staircase, all of which had to be dismantled and removed in pieces from the existing building.
Barnhart-Reese completed design-build services for the renovation of the main lobby area of the Center into a 6,000 square foot, two-story conference center with built-in desks and acoustical ceiling panels in a dramatic wave shape. Eight classroom breakout rooms were constructed on each floor to allow areas for intimate charrette-style conferences, yet be electronically connected to the main hall activities via video screens.
One of the major challenges was the aggressive 7 month fast-tracked schedule for the project. Barnhart-Reese managers utilized various proactive planning elements such as ordering of long-lead items and materials, and persistent evaluation and updating of the project schedule to complete the facility on time for the grand opening. Barnhart-Reese managers performed work throughout the night and attended coordination meetings during the day to expedite processes.
The project is a 2015 AGC Build San Diego Merit Award winner.
