The new Alex G. Spanos Athletic Performance Center has been a long-awaited renovation and expansion of the existing athletic performance facility for the UC San Diego campus. The project includes a new state-of-the-art 6,700 square foot strength and conditioning facility, along with renovations of a 3,570 square foot outdoor training court, and renovations to a 3,000 square foot exercise facility with rehabilitation and physical therapy space with sports faculty offices.
With exposed decorative architectural concrete tilt-up panel construction, street utility tie-ins, and working on an active campus, the aggressive five-month project schedule provided a unique challenge for Barnhart-Reese. Our goal was to provide a product to meet or exceed the level of excellence expected of the athletes training within its walls. Through close coordination with the University, the end-users, design team, and Barnhart-Reese’s qualified subcontractors, the team approach proved invaluable to successfully opening this facility for use by the anticipated date. The project is the recipient of a 2016 Orchid Award from the San Diego Architectural Foundation.
